The Contra Costa County Library in Pleasant Hill will be training volunteers this December to help with the Project Second Chance program.
Those interested in helping the community by providing tutoring services to adults in need can join the upcoming Project Second Chance tutor orientation. The course will be offered over a Zoom call and is a requirement for all volunteers before they can be matched with an adult learner. Tutors do not need any prior teaching experience, though they should be comfortable with their reading and writing skills and available to meet twice per week.
Project Second Chance is a literacy program offered by the Contra Costa County Library to help people who read or write below the 6th-grade level. All tutoring sessions are free to the students and confidential. Those who participate in the program must be over 16 years old and out of high school. Each tutoring session will last for about 90 minutes. Organizations that provide educational services such as this can advertise their programs with brochure printing.
The tutoring orientations will be held on December 8, December 16, and January 7. There are no fees necessary to become a Project Second Chance tutor, though volunteers must register for the orientation in advance. Links to the Zoom call will be sent 24 hours before the event. Those interested in supporting the program can donate to PSC, Inc.
