School traffic safety project at Laurel Elementary begins

As part of its ongoing efforts to improve the safety of its city streets, The City of Oceanside will be implementing a Safe Routes to School Program around Laurel Elementary, which will begin this month.

The city hopes to encourage students to walk or ride their bicycle to school through improvements to infrastructure, safety education, and enforcement. To this end, officials have conducted walk audits, surveyed parents, collected data, conferred with schools, and conducted neighborhood meetings, with the results being a plan of action. A project starting in July near Laurel Elementary is part of that plan and will be funded in part by a grant of $127,000 provided by Caltrans.

Chambers of commerce, realtors, and other interested parties may include information about such initiatives as the Safe Routes to School Program’s improvements in the promotional materials they send to local Print shops.

The specifics of the project known by the name Laurel Elementary Safe Routes to School will include street improvements to parts of Laurel, San Diego and Holly Streets. The project will consist of the installation of a high-visibility crosswalk, striping, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, signage, a traffic circle, a traffic-calming median, ADA ramps, a mini roundabout, curb extensions, and new sidewalks.

The work to improve safety around Laurel Elementary will commence this month and is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
