An annual writing festival is on now in Oceanside, and organizers are encouraging residents to scribble about their city for a chance to win recognition as well as prizes.
The annual Write On, Oceanside! Literary Festival is put on by the Oceanside Public Library with support from the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF). Contest organizers invite members of the public to submit pieces in one of two categories: teen for those from ages twelve through seventeen, or adult for those over eighteen.
Each author may submit one piece in the genre of creative nonfiction, fiction (short stories, not novels), or poetry. The Oceanside Library has provided the contest rules on its website. Participants can send in their entries electronically to hholley@oceansideca.org, or take them to the library, which is on North Coast Highway.
The actual literary festival will take place at a later date. There will be a panel discussion about publishing, an open mic, and a showcase for local writers. Authors who would like to take part in the showcase are asked to contact Hillary Holley at hholley@oceansideca.org. Organizers of this type of event can create decorations using banner printing.
June 1 is the last date to submit a piece to the contest. Winners will be notified by June 15. The Literary Festival is set for June 22, from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm, at the community room and plaza of the library. At 3:00 pm on that day, contest winners may read their works aloud.
