Oceanside police plan to enjoy coffee with residents

The Oceanside Police Department (OPD) would like to meet members of the community in a non-emergency situation, and suggests people come for a cup of “Coffee with a Cop” later this week

Meeting a law enforcement officer in a casual neighborhood setting gives members of the community a chance to ask about the work of the department, and understand the complexities of the job. Most contacts people have with police are in dangerous, highly emotional situations, or emergencies. These types of events are not places where it is easy or effective for people and police to try and talk to each other. Some people also feel that approaching a police officer on the street is difficult. Sitting down for a cup of coffee can change all that, allowing residents and an officer to get to know each other.

Frank McCoy, Oceanside's chief of police, said these informal get-togethers are an example of the desire on the part of the OPD to strengthen its relationship with the community it serves. He also noted that in addition to giving individuals a chance to speak to a law enforcement official, it also shows the strong ties between the department and the business community. Brochure printing can be used in situations like this to create informative materials for distribution.

Coffee with a Cop is set for this Thursday, July 25, at the San Luis Rey Bakery on North El Camino Real, from 8:00 am until 10:00 am.
