The Oceanside Police Department invites residents to “Coffee with a Cop” soon, in an informal setting.
Many municipalities offer this kind of opportunity, which gives residents a chance to sit down and talk with a police officer one-on-one. In fact, “Coffee with a Cop” is a nation-wide effort supported by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services of the Department of Justice.
Due to the nature of law enforcement, most people only have contact with the police during emergencies, which by their nature are highly emotional. At these times, it's difficult for either the residents or the officers to build a good working relationship. In addition, residents sometimes feel uncomfortable approaching officers on the street simply to talk to them. The “Coffee with a Cop” event allows for a relaxed chat between residents and those who protect them. Banner printing creates fun decorations and advertizing for occasions like this.
Frank McCoy, Oceanside's police chief, said the informal meeting is an example of the department's desire to strengthen ties between the police and the city's residents. It gives people a chance to meet police officers personally, share any concerns they have, and ask questions. McCoy also praised the Oceanside business community, which is participating enthusiastically in the effort.
This month, residents can have “Coffee with a Cop” at Starbucks on Oceanside Boulevard, from 9.00 am until 11.00 am on February 28.
