New tasting room open in Oceanside
Orfila Winery, which operates a vineyard in the San Pasqual Valley that includes a tasting room, recently opened a second tasting room in Oceanside. The new venue is located in the Pierside North apartment building, which is close to the pier.
The winery describes its wines as “ultra-premium” and sits on about 70 acres in the valley, 40 of which are devoted to growing the wine grapes. Orfila gets the grapes it uses from vineyards in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Sonoma counties. It also uses Oregon grapes to make its pinot noir.
Orfila began building the tasting room in Oceanside last summer, but had been thinking about developing the venue long before that. The marketing coordinator for Orfila, Jenn Olson, says opening the tasting room in Oceanside will allow the winery to expand. She said Oceanside is recognized for having a great food scene, and for the fact it is growing, which made it the perfect place for the new venture. When new premises like this open, managers can help build brand recognition by distributing promotional products.
Tom Blankenbeker is the manager of both tasting rooms, and said Oceanside was chosen in part because it is still undergoing a revitalization effort, a project that is already complete in many other coastal cities. Opening here, Blankenbeker said, gives the vineyard the chance to contribute to the community, and be part of its continuing growth.
