What's Happening in Long Beach, CA…

Long Beach set for a clean sweep

Long Beach offers an opportunity for everyone to get involved in keeping the city's beach clean, by holding clean-ups monthly, and February’s date has been confirmed.

Ordinarily, organizers would provide free refreshments, door prizes, gloves, and bags. However, due to the ongoing COVID situation, only gloves and bags will be provided. There will be no refreshments, and gatherings are prohibited. In addition, workers will be required to wear masks, though they can remain on the beach as long as they like. Street parking is available in the area.

The effort is being spearheaded by Justin Rudd, a community activist, who began organizing monthly beach clean-ups more than 19 years ago. In that time, Rudd and his volunteers have removed thousands of bags filled with debris, thanks to thousands of volunteers who have come to help. A state-sanctioned, non-profit environmental stewardship program, Keep California Beautiful, presented its Hal Albertson Volunteer of the Year award to Rudd for his 30-Minute Beach Clean-up effort.

The next clean-up date is Saturday, February 20 from 9:30 am until 10:30 am, at Rosie's Dog Beach in Long Beach. The actual clean-up will start at 10.00 am, and as noted, volunteers may remain after the official end time. Flyer printing can be used to create handouts inviting people to take part in events like this.
