University in Lake Forest area receives gift for music

A gift of $1 million will enable the Department of Music at the University of California (UC) Irvine at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts to extend its impact locally and around the world.

Gifted by the Jong Sup Kim Family Endowmen, these funds will be used for scholarships to recruit top talent, stipends for masterclasses and guest lectures that will bring top quality visiting artists to the university and foster significant partnerships with organizations in the community. Students from nearby Lake Forest who attend the university and others may be interested in learning more about this funding.

News of such donations and their benefits for students and a university are often made known throughout a community with flyer printing or banners.

Dean of the Arts at Claire Trevor, Tiffany López, said that music can bring people together so great things can be done. López added that this gift will enable students at the school to be connected through music to the global community.

The chair of the music department, Michael Dessen, said that some alumni of the school pursue careers in music while many others pursue a double major and have careers in education, business, law, or medicine. Dessen added that this gift will provide resources for the program that are needed to support students who follow different pathways in their careers, maintain excellence in music performance education, and enable the department to build partnerships in the community.
