South county mayors discuss location for homeless shelter

The former Silverado Elementary School property, which is owned by Orange County, has been proposed as a potential location for an emergency homeless shelter by the mayors of the county.

The mayors met at the request of Judge David O. Carter of the U.S. District Court to find ways to accommodate their share of the homeless in the county.

The school is currently used by the county as a library. Don Wagner, mayor of Irvine, said the school has a lot of space, although there are some limitations, including the lack of nearby homeless support services.

Mayor of Lake Forest, Jim Gardner, commented that two other sites had been proposed – the Los Pinos Conservation Camp and the Library of the Canyons. The former is in the Cleveland National Forest and was formerly the juvenile detention camp for the county. Wagner said the major issue with that location is that the federal government owns the property and not the county.

Gardner expressed concerns that if the school is used, the library would close and county would be better served if smaller facilities were found throughout the county to shelter people where they tend to migrate.

Printing services can be used to create various types of printed materials that can be distributed throughout the respective cities and the county so that people in the community can also become aware of such issues.
