Portola Park Plans Going Forward

On June 3 nearly 40 people gathered at City Hall in Lake Forest where a second workshop to develop Portola Park was held.

The general plan for the park was revealed and additional suggestions were solicited at the latest Portola Park meeting. The diversity of opinion among attendees as to what amenities the park should feature naturally lead to some disappointed participants.

Soccer devotees were particular vocal in feeling let down, saying that, notwithstanding the current nine soccer fields in Lake Forest and the city’s four multi-purpose fields, the city needed more soccer exclusive fields.

A flyer printing service might be of assistance to soccer enthusiast in building support for when the next recreational area is in the planning stage.

The plan that will go to the Parks and Recreation Commission includes an open area over one acre in size for multi-purpose use as well as a smaller one-acre dog park. Other approved amenities are a “tot lot”, six Pickleball courts and a single sand volleyball court.

Participants proffered suggestions and concerns such as whether 54-space parking area would be sufficient and, in light of the current drought, what water conserving efforts were being considered. The water demands for the park were discussed and suggestions in areas such as reclaiming water and the use of native plants that required less water were offered.
