An extension to the Jeffrey Open Space Trail is currently being mooted by the city of Irvine. This would complete the bicycle and pedestrian path from Portola Parkway to Interstate 405.
Those from nearby Lake Forest will want to take advantage of this trail, which features shade trees, grass areas, benches, and historical markers about the history of the region.
Anthony Kuo, Planning Commissioner, said the goal of building this extension is to continue the family-friendly environment of the city and to enable all family members to go outdoors, enjoy themselves, and do it safely.
The extension will connect the 2.5 miles of the trail north of I-5 with the 0.8-mile existing trail from the I-405 interchange to Barranca. Some of the features of the extension will be maps for the bikeway, benches, shade trees, and a water station. Cyclists will have to stop at traffic lights as there will not be any underpasses or bridges.
A member of the board of directors of the Orange County Bicycle Coalition, Bill Sellon, said the extension, once completed, will create a loop around Irvine that will enable people to walk or bike without ever having to be on a city street.
Cities often benefit from creating Flyers about the project, its specific paths, and amenities, as well as soliciting written comments from the public.
