Young minds to explore engineering at Downey camp

The City of Downey and Columbia Memorial Space Center will present the Young Explorer Engineering Camp 2024 next month for children showing interest in the engineering world.

The Columbia Memorial Space Center is a hands-on space center and interactive exhibit center whose mission is to provide accessible science-based experiences for visitors of all ages. Built on the site of the former NASA Downey facility, the center honors the crew of the fallen Space Shuttle Columbia. It features a 20,000 square foot, two-story building with interactive exhibits relating to the Space Shuttle operations, a high-definition computer lab, and a robotics lab.

The summer camp is designed for children ages 6 to 7 that show an interest in how things work and building things. The camp will offer hands-on activities that present engineering concepts in an age-appropriate way and allow the students to explore and solve real-world problems. Campers will be able to build bridges, houses, helicopters, and even robots. Organizers request that parents send their little ones with a snack and packed lunch each day. Every camper will also receive a summer camp shirt with the camp event Logo Design on it.

The Young Explorer Engineering Camp is scheduled for July 22 to July 26. The Columbia Memorial Space Center can be found at 12400 Columbia Way. The camp fee is $199.
