Downey to gain connection to light rail train

Residents of Downey will have new choices for transportation in the future as plans advance for convenient, rapid transit to downtown LA.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has obtained a $231 million grant to fund a light rail project to connect southeastern parts of the city to the larger Metro network. Initially about 14.5 miles long, the line will connect nine new stations. It will serve the cities of Bellflower, Cudahy, Paramount, Bell, Huntington Park, Vernon, South Gate and, of course, Downey.
Brochure printing can be used to effectively communicate train schedules and fares.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn asked the public to get involved in naming the new line in 2024. After voting on over 1,100 suggested names, the community selected the name “Southeast Gateway Line.” Marking the milestone, Hahn stated:

“The Southeast Gateway Line has the support of the people, and this new name brings us one huge step closer to making it a reality.”

Hahn also noted that 18% of area households don’t have access to a vehicle, and over half live below the poverty line, obviating the need for improved low-cost transportation for residents.

The line will eventually wind for more than 19 miles between Union Station and Pioneer Boulevard in Artesia. While more than $2 billion in funding has been identified, the project’s cost may eventually exceed $5 billion, and Metro will continue to seek funding sources, including the federal government.
