Downey residents can help themselves and others as well by participating in a 5K run/walk event this winter.
The event is a fundraiser to benefit the Downey Unified School District’s (DUSD) TLC Family Resource Center. Though not taking place until early 2026, those wishing to participate may want to register early, as the event will be capped at 1,500 participants. The event is co-sponsored by the city of Downey and Financial Partners Credit Union. Businesses or individuals interested in obtaining their own sponsorships may do so, as various sponsorship levels are available. Banner printing and poster printing provide useful signage for public events.
Early bird registration begins November 1 and closes January 31, 2026. The registration fee is $35 for the general public and $25 for DUSD students. Early birds get a T-shirt, a race bib, and a commemorative finishing medal. Participants registering in February, including the day of the race, are required to pay for T-Shirts separately.
The TLC Family Resource Center was started in 2000 with a grant from the state’s Healthy Start program. Its mission is to provide emotional and intellectual support to families within the district. Although initial funding allowed program establishment in only two schools, the program has since expanded to include all schools in the district. In June 2006, the program was recognized by the California Association of School Administration for its unique contributions to the community, receiving the Partners in Educational Excellence award.
