Recycling excellence of middle school students rewarded

The students of Cesar Chavez Middle School in the Lynwood Unified School District, a short distance from Downey, recently entered the Grades of Green Trash Free Lunchtime Challenge and took second place.

For the past school year, they have managed a lunchtime recycling program around the school that helped to eliminate 75% of the waste created during the lunch period. Chevron has given them a $750 education grant so that the program can continue to be funded.

Led by special education teacher Rachel Jimenez, representatives of the Cesar Chavez Green Team made a presentation of their activities to a panel of environmental experts.

Every day at lunch, they set up different trash barrels for plastic, paper, chip Bags, and drink cartons. Juice and milk that were not consumed are poured into a bucket so as not to contaminate the barrels, and food waste gets composted.

Using these methods, they were able to reduce an average of 16 Bags of trash per day to four Bags. The use of local Print companies to Print Signs to designate the different collection containers may have also gone a long way to help in these efforts.

Paul Gothold, Superintendent of the Lynwood Unified School District, remarked that this program makes for a cleaner campus and also teaches students about the importance of recycling and environmental awareness.
