Popular Mexican festival to return after hiatus

After a two-year hiatus, Downey’s Dia de los Muertos Festival will return to town next month for a day of loving remembrance of those who have passed.

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is originally a Mexican holiday honoring the memory and life of passed loved ones. Hosted by the Downey Theatre, the festival will give attendees the opportunity to construct ofrendas, or altars, in honor of those loved ones and decorate them with candles, personal items, art, or food, as the tradition goes.

There will also be art booths set up in the venue displaying arts and crafts from local Latino artists. Two stages will be dedicated to various entertainment, including folklorico dancers performing traditional Mexican dances. Food trucks and a beer and wine garden will also be included.

Any merchants interested in participating in the festival should visit the Downey Theatre’s website to download an application. Those wishing to volunteer can also find applications for download on the website.

The public can attend the Dia de los Muertos Festival free of charge on October 30, from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. The Downey Theatre is located on 8435 Firestone Boulevard. For event updates, those interested can follow the festival’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.
