New solar farm to provide power to California residents

Recently, United States Interior Secretary Sally Jewell dedicated close to 4,000 acres of black solar panels in a 550-megawatt farm, known as Desert Sunlight Solar Farm.

Located next to Joshua Tree National Park, it will provide power to over 160,000 average homes in California, including Downey and the greater Los Angeles area. It began operations in December 2014.

Desert Sunlight Solar Farm is a joint venture of NextEra Energy Resources, Sumitomo Corporation of Pacific Gas & Electric Company, GE Energy Financial Services, and Southern California Edison. Desert Sunlight will be the source for power for the next 20 years.

The developer of the project was First Solar Inc., based in Tempe, Arizona, which received a partial loan of $1.46bn from the United States Department of Energy to finance the project. According to Jewel, Desert Sunlight is the sixth solar project to come online in the Southwest and there are eight more being built at the current time.

Jewel added that one obstacle to the building of solar development is that a 30% federal investment tax will fall to 10% at the end of 2016. She may be working with Print companies to Print Flyers and other materials so that people in the community can have more information about solar energy and urge their Congressmen to continue such benefits.
