New school welcomes STEM students

The Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science opened last week, just a short distance from Downey.

The school was named for the first female mayor in Long Beach, Eunice Sato, and is the second institution to be created as part of the Measure K Bond Program of the Long Beach Unified School District within the past three years. The curriculum will focus on the STEM courses of science, math, engineering, and technology.

According to the principal, Mona Merlo, school will provide an excellent education for students looking to STEM fields for their careers. The school will serve both private and public schools within and outside of Long Beach.

Aside from traditional English and math, some of the courses that will be offered at the school include Honors Anatomy and Physiology, Engineering Design, and Accelerated Geometry. Learning will involve 3D printers, an engineering room, and adjunct engineering and Chinese language courses at Cal State Long Beach.

The chief advantage for students is that, once they have graduated, they will have completed 22 credits towards college and not have had to pay any tuition.

The school may have used brochure printing companies to Print items with more information about curriculums, courses, and other offerings at the school as a way to attract the many who applied and then were accepted as the first class.
