Historic eatery moves in preservation effort

Taco Bell recently announced that it will be raising and renovating the first Taco Bell restaurant in the world, built 53 years ago in Downey, and moving it to the company’s current headquarters in Irvine to prevent it from being demolished.

The building will make the 45-mile trip from Downey through such cities and towns as Norwalk, Cerritos, Buena Park, Anaheim, and Orange, and will stay on the company’s property in storage until it makes plans for its restoration and use in the future.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of Taco Bell Corp., Brian Niccol, this is the most important restaurant in the history of the company. The company began over 50 years ago as a 400 square foot walkup window bringing food inspired by Mexico to the masses. Now that the company has 6,000 restaurants around the world, he felt a responsibility to its customers and the founder, Glen Bell, to step in and take action.

When the company learned from the Downey Conservancy early in the year that the building might be demolished, it used social media to raise awareness about the situation.

It also began working closely with We Are The Next, a nonprofit involved in heritage conservation, to research and manage the relocation of the building. Initiatives like this often also involve working with a local Print company to create Flyers and other promotional materials.
