A new farmers’ market will open soon. Set up on the campus of the Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in Downey, it will be held weekly.
The measure got the approval of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in a unanimous vote recently. Janice Hahn, one of the county supervisors, brought the measure before the board, saying such a market will give people who live or work nearby a way to shop for locally grown, fresh produce, or just stop by and have fun during their lunch hour. Supporting Arms, a nonprofit agency, will run the market, and will use the proceeds from the market to help foster youth.
The hospital is a rehabilitation facility that was once a “poor farm” for the county in the 1920s. People who were homeless could go to such a farm receive room and board in exchange for work. Hospital representative Rochessa Washington said the hospital's history makes it a fitting location for a farmers’ market. She added that produce grown by patients in the hospital's community garden eventually will be sold at the market.
The market will open for the first time on Thursday, May 17, with operating hours of 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.
New ventures like this can get a boost if organizers work with a poster printing company to create Posters to place throughout the community, announcing the opening.
