Downey Unified schools honored

It was recently announced that the Educational Results Partnership (ERP) has chosen 13 Downey Unified Schools to be awarded the title of 2017-18 Honor Roll School; a total of 1,798 schools across the state were chosen.

The Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE) sponsors the program, which is part of a nationwide attempt to identify schools that are performing well above average, and are improving their students' outcomes.

In addition to this honor, the Downey Unified School District itself was one of 24 public school districts chosen to receive the title of 2017-18 Honor Roll School District, a distinction that parallels the one given the individual schools.

ERP, which is a nonprofit organization that uses scientific data to help students improve their scholastic results and get ready for careers, developed the Honor Roll. Schools that win this award have students who consistently show academic achievement; get better over time; and are functioning at approximately the same level. High schools that are considered for the award also have to show their students are ready for college.

The 13 Downey schools that won the Honor Roll title are Williams Elementary, Unsworth Elementary, Stauffer Middle School, Rio San Gabriel Elementary, Price Elementary, Old River Elementary, Lewis Elementary, Griffiths Middle School, Gallatin Elementary, Downey High, Doty Middle School, Carpenter Elementary, and Alameda Elementary.

Honors like this please everyone, so officials might work with a flyer printing company to create a letter updating residents.
