Officials from the Downey Unified School District recently held a groundbreaking ceremony, signaling the start of a new project to improve Sussman Middle School.
Superintendent Dr. John Garcia was joined by Dr. Connie Quintero, the new principal of the school; along with Bonnie Martin of Swinterton, the contractor; Alan Kong from Rachlin Partners; Rand Nicholl from Westberg White Architecture; and all the members of the Board of Education.
Modernizing Sussman Middle School and its campus will see the construction of a new classroom building two stories in height, along with a new library and gymnasium. The Administration building will get an addition, and a number of classrooms will be reconfigured. In addition, 14 restrooms will be renovated, and there will be accessibility upgrades to technology, security, and fire alarms throughout the campus.
The campus exterior will also be upgraded with the addition of a new parking area, the reconfiguration of an existing parking lot, and the addition of safety fencing. Brochure printing can be used to describe the amenities offered by renovations like this.
Nancy Swenson, the president of the Board of Education, said they were grateful to the community of Downey, whose voters approved Measure O in 2014. The funding coming from that decision is being used on this project, which means teachers and students will have more modern classrooms and other facilities in which to work and learn.
Future updates to Griffiths Middle School and Doty Middle School are also scheduled.
