Downey to host monthlong science celebration

The Greater Los Angeles area is a leader in STEM fields, and is kicking off a full month of scientific activities to educate and engage people of all ages in all things STEM, according to an article on LAist.com

Careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) industries are crucial to the nation's ability to compete in a global economy, and the City of STEM Launch Event is the start of an entire month celebrating science, as well as encouraging students to consider careers in these fields.

The festival will include almost 100 exhibitors, as well as interactive STEM activities provided by organizations throughout Southern California. In addition, City of STEM will present Diana Trujillo with its ICON award. Trujillo is an aerospace engineer who is working with NASA on the mission of its Curiosity rover. Curiosity follows the now-defunct Opportunity rover, which has been beaming back images from Mars for the past 15 years.

Other planned activities include a bounce house that looks like a space shuttle, VR experiences, food trucks, and live music. Poster printing can be used at events like this to create Signs to help visitors identify specific exhibitors.

The free STEM Launch Event is set for April 6, with Bill Nye, the Science Guy, as the special guest. Also on the guest roster are Marvel Studios, rock band OK Go!, and Impossible Science!'s Jason Latimer. The fun runs from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm at Downey's Columbia Memorial Space Center.
