After the success of a pilot program that began in 2016, Downey City Library and the Downey Unified School District recently started implementing it throughout the system, allowing students access to the library.
Downey Unified partnered with the Downey City Library in 2016, and created a way by which Warren and Downey high school students could assess the library’s resources. Students could use their high school ID to check out as many as three Books, use online materials such as eBooks and databases, and access study spaces and the computer lab.
Martha Ortiz, currently the librarian at Downey High School, was instrumental in creating the program, and guided it for its first year. Her background as the director of the Downey City Library gave her insight into the best way to implement the effort. Officials devising projects like this can use poster printing to make people aware of their options.
Since it’s been so successful, Downey United is now incorporating the program, known as Downey One Card, into all the system’s high schools. The program is available to all students; all they need do is fill out a form and show their ID at the Downey City Library. As with any library, students are responsible for any materials they check out, and they have to sign up for the program each year. The Downey One Card is theirs to use until they graduate, or move away from the district.
