Downey kids to explore Polynesian dance

Children in Downey will have the chance to learn the basic dance movements of Polynesian dance and hula during a new dance class workshop happening next month.

Organizer and facilitator of the event, the City of Downey provides various enrichment programs and educational activities for individuals of all ages. The dance workshop series is one such example of these programs, and it will run throughout the month of January. The classes are designed for children and adolescents and will focus on teaching the foundations of Polynesian dance and other aspects of island dance and music.

The instructor Toni Stewart will lead students through the process of learning the basics of the hula steps and arm movements and how to weave these movements together to perform the graceful hula to the traditional music of Hawaii. Other movements that will be taught include Maori poi balls, Tahitian dance, pu'ili sticks, and poi balls. Students will also have the chance to perform in shows, which will have an additional entry fee.

Event organizers may choose local flyer printing services to Print out informative Flyers to advertise such classes with.

The Polynesian dance series will take place from January 7 to January 28, on Tuesdays. It will be held at the Barbara J. Riley Community and Senior Center, which is located at 7810 Quill Drive.
