Downey considers its future

Downey residents, as well as business owners, recently attended a presentation that gave them a look into what the future could hold for the city, as various development projects begin.

Aldo Schindler, the city’s community development director, discussed a number of different projects and properties, and what they mean for Downey. The subjects included the Downtown Community Benefit District, which was recently established, to potential new building projects. New businesses of all kinds have a chance to consider Logo Design when they open their doors.

The Downtown Community Benefit District was developed after three years of study and consultation with downtown property owners. An assessment district such as the one just set up is allowed to keep all the taxes businesses within it earn; none of it is paid to the federal government, the state, the county, the city, the school district, or any other entity that can levy taxes. Instead, all of the money is returned to the district, where the local board of directors decides how to spend it, making it a considerable economic benefit to downtown Downey.

Schindler went on to discuss some of the other planned projects. Randy’s Donuts recently announced it will build a store from the ground up, on a former used-car dealership lot on Firestone Boulevard. Perhaps even more interesting is the news that a planned Marriot Springhill Suites hotel is likely to begin construction early in 2019.
