Downey community to receive emergency response training

Next month, the Downey Office of Emergency Management will hold the Downey's Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) Spring 2023 Session for those in the community interested in becoming certified.

The CERT program is open to any Downey resident aged 11 years and over who wish to become trained in preparing for a catastrophic event that may affect their community. Minors aged 11 through 18 will need to be accompanied by an adult, with one adult per child attending.

The program has three days of training, and attendees must complete all three days to receive a certificate of completion. The training will go over what happens in the early stages of a catastrophic disaster, such as an earthquake, flood, or wildfire. During such emergencies, especially before emergency professionals arrive at the scene, citizens may volunteer to help. Without proper training, however, these individuals may be putting themselves in serious danger while attempting to help. CERT members will be trained in the areas of fire suppression, medical operations, damage assessment, team organization, and several others.

Detailed Brochures may be helpful in training sessions such as this, and such materials can be printed at most businesses offering brochure printing services.

The free CERT session is scheduled for April 21, 22, and 23. It will take place at Downey Fire Station #1 at 12222 Paramount Boulevard.
