What's Happening in Chino, CA…

Chino area to introduce basics of plant pruning

Pruning can be a valuable skill for the home horticulturist, and a Chino area workshop will introduce some basic techniques.

Knowing how to properly prune a tree or shrub can lead to increased yields of fruit and flowers, and it can also help to keep plants healthy. Horticulture Lead and Conservation Technician George Jimenez will guide the session, and it will take place at the Waterwise Community Center’s public garden, which is located in Montclair.

Attendees will have the chance to learn about pruning tools, including how to keep them sharp and in good working order. They will find out which ones are “essentials” and also how to choose equipment at a variety of price points. Everyone will learn how and where to make their pruning cuts for different purposes, such as keeping a tree tidy and under control. To thank them for coming out, each participant will receive a packet of native wildflower seeds to take home. A plant raffle will wrap up the experience.

Many gardeners welcome the chance to pick up new horticultural skills, and a workshop provides a way to do so. Cheat sheets of plant care tips as well as paper seed envelopes, plant tags, and other items can be crafted for an activity by area printing services companies.

This opportunity to get the inside scoop on working with secateurs, pole pruners, and more will be offered on Saturday, February 8 starting at 9:00 am. There is no charge to attend.
