Gilbert explores earth and sky phenomena

The first Earth and Space Open House of 2018 is coming in a few weeks. The three-hour event will give guests an opportunity to learn about the earth and sky through exhibits, a lecture, a 3D planetarium show, and a chance to stargaze through a nearby telescope.

Experts will be on hand to answer questions on topics such as the moon, geology, meteorites, earthquakes, astrobiology, space exploration, and cosmology. There will be an array of hands-on science activities that should pique the interest of all ages. Some of them, like the make-your-own-alien project, can be taken home.

Two planetarium shows will be scheduled during the evening in the Marston Exploration Theater. The theater will also feature a keynote lecture between the shows.

Weather permitting, the ASU Astronomy Club will be helping Gilbert guests view celestial objects through the onsite telescopes. The GeoClub will be displaying and discussing Earth, especially its rocks, and the Center for Meteorite Studies will be open , where everyone gets to feel a rock from outer space. Guests can also view the full-scale replica of the current Mars Rover.

There will also be an ‘out-of-this-world’ poster display. Exhibits such as this showcase the art of poster printing.

The Open House will be September 21, from 6:30 pm until 9:30 pm at the Interdisciplinary Science & Technology Building IV, 781 South Terrace Road, Tempe.
