This beloved structure has now become one of 109 abbeys, monasteries and churches seeking a place on the list. Like the others, it is a building that can be traced all the way back to the Middle Ages, which is the source of its claim for UNESCO recognition.
If the bid proves successful, Paisley Abbey will become a site of historic significance. In turn, this would be likely to greatly increase the number of tourists who visit it each year, bringing knock-on economic benefits to the area.
Several Paisley businesses could help to inform visitors about the fascinating history of the abbey, including ones that can supply tourism-related brochure printing.
At the moment, a total of 1,199 buildings around the world are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The UK is home to 33 of them, but only six are located within Scotland, so this would be a major honour for Paisley Abbey.
According to the Daily Record, its minister Jim Gibson said:
“It’s a real opportunity to bring something very special to the town of Paisley and, of course, to the region and our country as a whole.”
Renfrewshire Council will be supporting the bid.
