Playwright from Paisley to receive town hall honour

One of the leading playwrights in Scotland will be honoured when the revamped Paisley Town Hall opens, by having several rooms in it named after his characters.

John Byrne is a playwright and artist most famous for his trilogy ‘The Slab Boys’ and he was born in Paisley. Now his hometown will pay tribute to him by naming rooms within the new town hall after characters from his play entitled ‘Cuttin’ a Rug.’ This is part of the celebrated trilogy and is set within Paisley Town Hall.

That building is currently undergoing a major refurbishment at a cost of £22m. As part of this, four existing and new conference and meeting rooms will be named the Jacquard Suite, Stobo Room, McCann Room and Skinnedar Suite after characters in the play.

Events hosted within the new town hall once the work on it is finished can always be promoted using brochure printing shops in Paisley.

Speaking to the Daily Record about the announcement, Provost Cameron said:

“It is fitting that in the year he is awarded the Freedom of Renfrewshire that we can ensure one of his best-loved works, ‘Cuttin’ a Rug’, is permanently marked in the building in which it is set.”

The Victorian-era Paisley Town Hall building holds A-listed status and is scheduled to reopen to the public in 2023.
