This competition is the idea of local community group the Friends of Barshaw Park and people are being encouraged to come up with a relevant work of art, with the winner being put on display at the park. People can enter as part of a group or on their own and if they win, their work will go on show to mark VE Day 2020, which is the 75-year anniversary of the end of World War Two.
Although the chosen artwork will be placed in the park for the anniversary, which is in May, it will remain there afterwards as a permanent feature. It will be made out of steel panels that are laser cut and will be situated within the Peace Garden section of the park.
Print shops are sometimes used to provide souvenir Postcards of local artworks and speaking to the Daily Record, Karen Sutherland from the group stated that the unveiling would happen during the three-day period of VE Day celebrations, adding:
βThe two panels β each measuring 4ft by 1ft β can be as finely decorated as you wish and can also include text.β
