The museum has been awarded a grant worth £60,000 by Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) that will be put towards the most comprehensive display of these shawls in its history. Paisley Museum started collecting them over a hundred years ago, and it will also use the grant to highlight shawls’ long association with the town and their wider importance to the world.

Lisa-Marie Hughes from Renfrewshire Leisure told the Daily Record that celebrating the cultural heritage of a place helps to improve the health and wellbeing of people living there.
She then added:
“The Paisley shawl collection exemplifies this link with our past in a most enjoyable, colourful and illuminating way.”
She concluded by saying that she was happy at the news of the grant for the museum and that she was grateful for the support of MGS.
Paisley Museum has roughly 1,200 of these shawls in its collection at the moment, most of which are likely to feature in the exhibition. This will take place following its £42m renovation and relaunch, set for 2023.
