The suggestion that an iconic annual festival that takes place in Paisley could be reduced in scale this year has been abandoned in favour of a full programme, following protests.
Known as Sma’ Shot Day, this event is a commemoration of weavers in Paisley who won a battle against factory owners to be paid for the Sma’ Shot stitching used to bind the shawls woven in the town. It is seen as an important part of the town’s history, as well as a party, but there had been proposals mooted to drop some parts of the annual proceedings this year.
Among the parts that members of the local council had proposed ditching were the traditional parade route and the various attractions and stalls set up at Abbey Close. It was suggested that a shorter parade ending at Shuttle Street, where the former Sma’ Shot cottages are, could take place instead.
Now the original format has been reinstated though, after other councillors and local people objected. Festivals like this are very popular and Paisley poster printing outlets can assist with the promotion of them.
Eddie Devine from the council stated that he was happy that the choice had been made to keep the standard central parade route as well as potentially expanding it to take in Shuttle Street.
It takes place in early July.
