Charity seeks to restore Paisley army barracks

A local charity that works with the community and veterans in particular is hoping to restore a disused army barracks in Paisley, and it is planning to submit its ideas for this to Renfrewshire Council.

The Western Desert Recce Group (WDRG) is hoping to submit a community asset transfer (CAT) request to the council for these barracks. If that request is granted it would enable them to begin the process of restoring the Whitehaugh Barracks, which have been allowed to fall into a state of disrepair in recent years.

The idea posited by this group is to create a centre for the people of Paisley out of it, coupled with a museum that would feature vehicles and machinery used during the two world wars.

According to the Daily Record, the WDRG chairperson Gary Wallace stated that:

“We want to make sure that it is a place that is a positive aspect of the community. That is why we are wanting to turn it into a working and living history museum.”

Local museums often need information leaflets covering their exhibits and Paisley shops that provide brochure printing are one way that they can get them.

If the plan for a museum and community hub is rejected, the WDRG has other proposals for the barracks. A second potential idea is to turn it into a men’s shed.
