The ‘Men’s Shed’ project was originally launched in Australia and has since been adopted by a number of places in the UK. The idea is to provide a space where men can meet and get mental health support. The Helensburgh and District Men’s Shed Association is looking to create a facility within the newly redeveloped Hermitage Park.
The planning committee set up by the council gave the project its unanimous approval, which means that the next stage will be for the association to find the financing needed to make it a reality. Graphic design is often used to help show what the finished project will look like during the fundraising process.
According to the Helensburgh Advertiser, Cllr Ellen Morton stated at the meeting that:
“The proposal wouldn’t have any impact on the Victoria Halls, or on the planning, protective services and licensing committee’s power to reach a decision on any planning application.”
The association will also need to agree a lease for the chosen site, which is in the park’s south-west, in between the burn and the Victoria Halls. This process – as well as the application for planning permission – is expected to start early in the year.
