The Weaving on Ancient Looms workshop, which uses experimental archaeology, will be held in Swindon at the end of September.
This is a chance to discover how weaving evolved from the hand-worked process of prehistory to the Iron and Bronze Age techniques that required a loom. It should appeal to people with an interest in history and, in particular, those eager to learn more about the history of technology.
The workshop will examine the fundamental principles underlying weaving through the assembling and use of a backstrap loom, which those attending can subsequently take away. It also involves assisting in the construction, as well as the use of a warp-weighted loom, incorporating tablet-woven initial borders.
Gareth Riseborough and Sally Pointer, archaeologists and experts in historical crafts, will be on hand to guide the participants, offering advice and encouragement.
The cost is £80.00, which is inclusive of refreshments. Attendees should bring their own pre-prepared lunch, as well as a drinking cup (for reasons of hygiene). There is a minimum age requirement of 16 and local accommodation can be quite easily found if required. Flyer printing helps to make people aware of happenings in the local community, and can be used to advertise workshops like this.
The Weaving on Ancient Looms Workshop will take place between 10am and 4pm on Sunday 27th September at Berrycroft Hub, Swindon.
