What's Happening in Romford, Essex, England…

Work on new Romford walkway to begin

The construction of a Romford walkway is set to get underway next month.

Citizens started to campaign for the improvement to the local infrastructure six years ago. Their effort should reap its reward during November, as a crossing at Waterloo Road is set to promote public safety.

Osman Dervish, a councillor for Havering with responsibility for the environment, told the Romford Recorder:

"We have scheduled the works with contractors but are waiting for the completion of the land transfer to the council which is needed to put the crossing in place. We sympathise with residents' frustration and thank them for their patience.”

Resident Caroline Thomas initiated a petition in the first instance. She was concerned that a dual carriageway was impeding pedestrian access. In 2015, a highways committee agreed that the council should act. Organisations submitting plans to the authorities can use print shops in the local area to prepare documents.

An estimate suggested that £150,000 should be allocated to the project. A toucan crossing will have the capacity to enable the movement of residents.

Paresh Krishan has described how awkward the absence of a proper crossing has been. He outlined how getting to his home from Romford Station involved walking for an additional distance of 600 metres to cross the road safely.

Krishan may be satisfied by the new arrangement when the work is completed. He seems pleased that he will be able to get to where he wants to go without having to negotiate the subway.
