What's Happening in Manchester, England…

Non-profit workspace coming to Manchester

King Street in Manchester City Centre could be set to become a hub for local arts and business, should ambitious new plans for a non-profit coffee business come to fruition.

The local creative co-operative, Future Artists, has announced plans for a shop called The Honest Coffee Shop, which would invest all of its takings into the Manchester community and provide workspace for hire to businesses and creative individuals.

The co-operative, which is based in the east of the city, had already succeeded in securing £15,000 for the project before deciding to set up a Kickstarter to find the remaining £5,000 required. This led to donations totalling £5,571 by the time the deadline passed, giving the shop every chance of seeing the light of day.

A member of Future Artists, Mark Ashmore, said:

“The idea for this came because there are a lot of pop-up shops and fringe spaces but not one, central space for artists and creatives to work in Manchester.”

If it launches, the Honest Coffee Shop will be able to rely on Manchester print companies to provide high quality colour and digital printing to assist the artists and businesses renting the space. The plans could revive a formerly thriving retail area that has been badly hit by the recession, as well benefiting the wider populace within the city, with potential profits being used to provide grants to charitable causes and community groups.
