What's Happening in Manchester, England…

Manchester Digital to address diversity

Manchester Digital, a trade association, is working to tackle a perceived lack of diversity in the sector.

The organisation is putting on an event with several other companies as there is a common feeling that there is a gender imbalance within the digital sector. Issues of a lack of flexibility and inequitable pay will be debated at the meeting. Digital business cards from Manchester may be in greater demand if the event leads to significant changes.

Rachel Thompson, a marketing manager for Manchester Digital, stated:

“Given that Manchester is one of Europe’s most significant technology hubs, it makes sense that we lead the way in attracting and retaining diverse workforces. We should be creating best practices for other cities to follow.”

Thompson pointed out that women are as competent as men at digital tasks. Furthermore, she claimed that women could also bring distinctive qualities to workforces and advocated balanced teams. Rowena Burns, the chief executive for Manchester Science Partnerships (MSP), said the issue needed action.

The idea is that the session will have a concrete outcome. A tool for workplace equality should allow enterprises to break down barriers to progress via practical measures.

A regional poll found that 70% of respondents were sceptical about whether or not the industry was tackling diversity issues. Over a third of the people surveyed did not think that their business had a diversity policy at all.
