Manchester building bags annual award

Manchester Central Library has claimed a prestigious award, having been named the Building of the Year at a recent ceremony.

This award was handed out during the Property and Construction Annual Dinner held by Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, which took place at the city centre Hilton Deansgate hotel.

Baroness Beverley Hughes was there to present the award, with Citylabs, Manchester City Football Academy and an office block in St Peter’s Square, the other buildings shortlisted for the prize.

The building stands as the second biggest library in Britain and was constructed 80 years ago this year. E Vincent Harris designed it and its domed shape was loosely inspired by Rome’s Pantheon.

Holding Grade Two listed status, the library has recently undergone a major refurbishment, at a cost of £48 million, which was completed in March – with this award serving as a testament to the quality of the work.

The awards evening was hosted by Mike Gibson from the Property and Construction Committee for the Chamber, and he told the Manchester Evening News that:

“Manchester Central Library has been selected as this year’s Building of the Year Award winner as it is a high quality reconstruction and refurbishment of one of the city’s crown jewels.”

The library is always able to rely on shops that provide newsletter printing in Manchester, so that it can produce materials outlining upcoming events.
