What's Happening in Manchester, England…

Literary walking tours coming to Manchester

The Manchester Literature Festival (MLF) is set to come to life through a series of literary walks.

Guided literary walks will form a key part of the MLF in 2016. The writings of great authors like Elizabeth Gaskell, Eric Blair and Charles Dickens will be celebrated. Postcard printing in Manchester could be used to promote the literary festival next year.

Ed Glinert is leading the walking tours this time around and he told the Manchester Evening News:

“People don’t always associate Manchester as a centre of literary history, people usually think of football or music. But we have had our own fair share of novelists, including Anthony Burgess, Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell.”

The varied libraries of Manchester will be showcased during the MLF. Chetham’s Library was established way back in 1653 and is still been used to this day. The Portico Library is an institution that dates from the Georgian period. It contains a classic work by Thomas De Quincy. The John Rylands Library also houses important items. A literary tour in the middle of October will visit Central Library as well as the three other libraries.

Glinert confirmed that he has done an abundance of research into local literature. While many famous authors have written stories set in Manchester, several important writers have been born in the city. Elizabeth Gaskell and Anthony Burgess were actually born in Manchester.
