Co-operative ramps up awareness campaign for Fairtrade Fortnight

The Co-operative Group is aiming to raise awareness of the ethical credentials celebrated by its chain of supermarkets as part of Fairtrade Fortnight.

Fairtrade Fortnight is a UK-wide initiative led by the Fairtrade organisation, which campaigns for farmers and producers of food across the world to be treated fairly by retailers and ensure they’re given fair payment in exchange for goods.

The Co-operative Group, one of the first retailers to support the Fairtrade initiative, is hoping to achieve 90 per cent of its target to clearly label any product that can be called Fairtrade to better inform the decisions of consumers and to encourage more people to shop Fairtrade.

The Co-op was the first supermarket to switch is whole coffee range to fit in with the initiative and is celebrating ten years of Fairtrade coffee this year. In addition to this, their chocolate bars have long-since been certified as Fairtrade and the recognisable logo is often featured in the Co-op's packaging and POS printing.

To help boost the initiatives, the Co-operative Group arranged Fairtrade United, an event in Manchester last year which combined workshops, seminars and talks to encourage more fair trading between communities across the world. This year, the group also has also arranged to spread the message across the UK by distributing Fairtrade leaflets to local homes. These have been created using flyer printing services provided by printing companies in Manchester.

The Co-operative Group also runs a number of similar projects in countries across the globe. More information can be found via the group's website.
