The group, which incorporates Lutterworth Town Council, Harborough District Council, Leicestershire County Council and LeicesterShire Promotions, made the suggestion as part of the Tourism Blueprint that emerged from a consultation on making Lutterworth more appealing to tourists. It would see the museum relocated to the centre of town.
Lutterworth Museum is currently situated in Wycliffe House, on Gilmorton Road. It is argued that the switch to a less outlying locale would be more convenient for visitors to the town and could leave the venue better placed to capitalise on the town’s links to Sir Frank Whittle, who invented the turbojet engine at the British Thomson-Houston engineering works in in the town.
Chairman of the Sir Frank Whittle Trust, Edward Helmsely, said:
“The museum is very well-regarded but, perhaps, not in the best location to maximise on visitors’ footfall.
“Therefore, a more central location would be desirable for enhancing visitor attraction and also for strengthening the town’s links with Sir Frank. The trust would fully support such a move.”
The museum boasts a vast array of archive displays and photographs of the town and nearby villages, with the section devoted to Sir Frank Whittle serving as the jewel in its crown.
