Sir Frank Whittle is famous as the man who came up with the jet engine. Now, the Royal Mail is marking 30 years since his death with a collection of First Class stamps featuring images of military jet aircraft. It has also put out a miniature sheet consisting of four stamps that feature pictures of the man himself. Both of these collections are now available for people to buy.
Although he was not born in Lutterworth, Whittle had a deep connection to the town. When his company was developing and testing the very first jet engine, they chose a base in Lutterworth. Power Jets Ltd was headquartered at Ladywood Works, which was a former foundry.
