It was developed with the aim of sparking an interest in engineering amongst young people, and the pupils were entering for the first time – making their eventual achievement of finishing eighth at national level all the more impressive.
The challenge requires each team to produce miniature-scale Formula 1 racing cars fuelled by compressed gas, employing 3D computer software to create the designs. The models go through a process of being analysed, manufactured, tested and raced by the teams, before being showcased regionally and nationally. Having succeeded in the regional finals, Team Momentous continued to compete in the recent UK finals, which were held at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
