Barbara Brookes won a free flight in a glider during a charity raffle that was put together by the Mayor of Lutterworth. At first, the 90-year-old did not believe the news when she was told. Indeed, she even contacted the Mayor and complained about it. Once it had been made clear that everything was above board though, she began to think about how others could benefit from her good fortune.
Having resolved to take up the offer of a glider trip, Brookes decided to turn it into a fundraiser. She is seeking sponsorship and will donate all of the money raised to three different charities.
They are the Academy for Dementia Research and Education, Lutterworth Community Transport and Age Concern Lutterworth. Flyer printing by shops in the town can help local people to spread the word about charity fundraising efforts like this one.
Talking to a local source, Brookes stated that she had never expected to win when she entered the raffle. She added that:
“Once I got over the shock – and the embarrassment – I knew I wanted to use this chance to give back to the groups that have helped me so much.”
The flight takes place on 18 May.
