Alongside the housing, this proposal would also see an area of land measuring 7.7 acres put aside to be used for creating community allotments, which could help resolve a problem that has emerged in the town.
Harborough District Council is keen to find a buyer for the existing allotments, located centrally in De Verdon Road, as it tries to find ways of raising additional cash.
With the council hoping that a housing development firm will purchase them before the end of next year, the allotments featured in the new proposal could serve as the ideal replacement for them – with the planned site believed to be considerably larger.
Lutterworth Allotments Association has spent years campaigning for the allotments on De Verdon Road to be saved, and its chairman Dave Beaumont told the Harborough Mail that this new development was welcome, saying:
“We basically got a two-year extension to find and develop a new site.
“I’ve seen this solution on the Mulberry Development Plans, and I think it’s a good idea – it could be a lot worse.”
