The organ that is built into Lutterworth United Reform Church celebrates its centenary this year and, despite its age, the instrument still sounds on fine form. A special concert was held on 12th October to mark the organ’s centenary, where renowned organist Gordon Stewart played the organ. Stewart has played organs in some of the world’s most well-known cathedrals, including St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, so it was a real honour for Lutterworth’s United Reformed Church to play host to him and his musical talents as part of the concert.
Trevor Stott was the man behind the idea for holding the Organ Spectacular to mark the centenary. Stott spoke about this, saying:
“The idea for our spectacular came about as a result of my wife Pauline and I being in church to do the Christmas decorations last December, at the same time as the organ tuner was doing his stuff. I asked him when the organ was built, and when he replied 1912, the centenary idea was born.”
As well as being an evening of music, the concert also featured a video showing the organ’s working parts actually creating the music. Concerts like this are often advertised using poster printing. Lutterworth United Reformed Church promoted the concert through a local press and tickets for the event were sold to local people to help boost funds for the church.
