Rewilding scheme in Dagenham to include white storks

A rewilding scheme set to be carried out at a park in Dagenham will include the introduction of a rare species of bird.

This scheme will be conducted at Eastbrookend Country Park, with financing coming from a variety of sources. Barking and Dagenham Council has provided money, while the rest of the funding came via the London Wildlife Trust and the Green Roots Fund set up by mayor Sadiq Khan. The most exciting part of the scheme will involve bringing white storks to the park – which have not been in London for 600 years.

The birds were originally native to this country, but became extinct here all the way back in the 15th century. They will be brought to the Dagenham park as a breeding colony alongside beavers.

Places of this kind attract significant interest from the public, including both residents and tourists. Local councils sometimes uses brochure printing shops to supply people with information about them.

Khan set up the Green Roots Fund to finance schemes that improve the environmental friendliness of the capital. According to BBC News, he said:

“Access to nature is an issue of social justice and it can’t just be those who live in the countryside who get to share their home with our amazing wild creatures.”

The storks will be brought to the park in October 2026.
